Galway City Council Social Work is a consent based, confidential, voluntary service. We empower people to solve issues in their everyday lives, identify and understand sources of stress or difficulty, develop coping skills, and find solutions to their problems.

What can Galway City Council Social Work help with?

• Needs of older people and vulnerable adults.
• Mental health and/or medical difficulties.
• Disability.
• Homelessness and Homeless prevention support.
• Child and family matters.
• Marital and relationship issues.
• Addiction.
• Signposting and referral to relevant services.
• Advocacy and inter-agency co-ordination.
• Short term counselling and emotional support.
• Domestic Violence / intimate partner violence.
• Difficulties budgeting/managing finances.
• Difficulties accessing services.
• Complex discharges (e.g., hospital, prison).

A social work referral must meet the threshold for social work intervention before a social worker is allocated and referrals are prioritized based on need.

If the referral does not meet the threshold for social work intervention, the reason for refusal will be recorded and the referrer will be written to or contacted by phone.
